PROFESSOR TAL-HATU KOLAPO HAMZAT’S CITATION:
Tal-hatu Kolapo HAMZAT (or Professor T.K. Hamzat), born on 15th June 1970 in Ibadan, is a Professor of Neurological Physiotherapy studied Physiotherapy at the prestigious Nigeria premier University of Ibadan and obtained a Bachelor of Science (Honours) degree with Second Class-Upper Division in March 1994. He belongs to the first group of physiotherapy graduates Nigeria to be officially inducted into physiotherapy profession on Friday 18 March, 1994. After the mandatory 12 months post-graduation internship at the University of Benin Teaching Hospital Ugbowo Benin City (1994 to 1995), he partook in the compulsory National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) scheme as a Physiotherapist at the Department of Physiotherapy General Hospital (now Lagos State University teaching Hospital) Ikeja from 1995 to 1996 where he served meritoriously. He returned to his alma mater, University of Ibadan for postgraduate trainings where he obtained a Master of Education (M.Ed.) degree in Physiology of Exercise (with distinction grade) at the Department of Human Kinetics and Health Education in May 1998. In February 2001 from the Department of Physiotherapy, College of Medicine, University of Ibadan, he obtained a PhD in Neurological Physiotherapy as the first person to obtain a PhD degree in physiotherapy from any University in West Africa. His clinical work experiences traversed a variety of settings including general, private and teaching hospitals as a physiotherapy clinician including University of Benin Teaching Hospital, Benin City, Nigeria; General Hospital Ikeja, Nigeria, Solargrace Physiotherapy Clinic, Ibadan Nigeria and Korle Bu Teaching Hospital, Accra Ghana and the prestigious University College Hospital Ibadan where he has been holding appointment as an Honourary Clinical Consultant (later Specialist Adviser) in Neurophysiotherapy since August 2005. His professional academic career started at the Department of Physiotherapy College of Medicine, University of Ibadan on 23 August, 2001 as a Lecturer-I and was promoted to a Senior Lecturer in October 2004. On October 1, 2009 as a high flyer he was promoted from the rank of Senior lecturer to the grade of Professor of Physiotherapy, becoming the first professor of Neurological Physiotherapy in Africa at the age of 39 years, the youngest to attain a full professor of physiotherapy status in Africa. Professor Hamzat’s career has afforded him the opportunities to teach undergraduate and postgraduate students in physiotherapy and medicine for about 19 years at the University of Ibadan as a full-time staff and University of Ghana as a Visiting Scholar and University of Maiduguri as a Visiting professor. He has successfully supervised 25 Bachelor of Physiotherapy; 34 M.Sc. Physiotherapy and 8 PhD degree research works. Professor Hamzat served as an examiner for several dissertations, projects and theses within and outside University of Ibadan. He has more than 100 publications to date and these include 2 edited books, chapters in book and articles in peer review, high impact journals. He has served as Editor-in-Chief; Managing Editor; Editorial Board Member and reviewer for several journals in Nigeria and beyond. A member of several professional and academic communities in Nigeria and beyond; and this include membership of the Nigeria Society of Physiotherapy; Ergonomic Society of Nigeria; European Stroke Society; Society for the Study of Pain in Nigeria; African Academy of Sciences; Nigerian Federation for NeuroRehabilitation; International Parkinson and Movement Disorders Society; World Stroke Organisation; Africa Stroke Organisation; World Federation for Neurorehabilitation, among others. Attendance at several conferences has afforded him opportunities to make several platform and poster presentations at the scientific meet and activities of these organisations. Professor Hamzat has made significant contributions to the world of intellectuals and professional communities, and has been conferred with honorific titles of Fellow by the following reputable organisations: Fellow, African Academy of Sciences (FAAS); and by examination as a Fellow, Postgraduate Physiotherapy College of Nigeria (FPPC Neurol). These are the evidences of recognition as a scholar, scientist and professional of high repute. Certificate in Time Management of the London Postgraduate School. His contributions to administration and management of University of Ibadan at unit, Departmental, Faculty, College, Hostel and Students management, Senate and management committee over the years are well documented. His roles include serving as a Sub-Dean (Nursing and Physiotherapy); Sub-Dean Postgraduate at the Faculty of Clinical Sciences, Undergraduate, postgraduate and clinical coordinator at the Department of Physiotherapy and later as Head of Department of Physiotherapy; Editor Faculty of Clinical Sciences publications; Hall Master of Alexander Brown Hall; Member Senate Ad-Hoc Committee on Student Evaluation of Teachers; Chairman Adhoc Investigative Panel on Idia-Nnamdi Azikiwe Hall students crisis; Member Joint Council-Senate Committee on Street Naming; Member University of Ibadan Quality Assurance Policy Drafting Committee; Member UI at 60 Central Planning Committee at the College of Medicine; Member UI at 65 Central Planning Committee among several others. Professor Hamzat ‘s experience in administration and governance also include serving as a member Board of Management of University College Hospital, Ibadan; Board of Management Otunba Subomi National Paediatric Centre, Ijebu Ode, Alex-Akwueme Federal University Teaching Hospital Abakaliki, Ebonyi State (March 2018 to date). In the private sector, he serves as a member Board of Trustees of Bayonet Blade Security Limited; Member Board of Trustees StrokeAction Nigeria; Vice Chairman Board of LaNaishom Limited and member. Those are in addition to serving on the Board of Trustees of ASIDO Foundation and Stroke Action Project Nigeria. With about 40 awards and honours including the Most admired Male Lecturer College of Medicine; outstanding patron of the year award for 3 consecutive years by the Nigeria Red Cross Society student’s detachment, the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Oyo State Chapter award for labour activity support; Brownite of Honour Award and induction into the Alexander Brown Hall of Fame. He is presently serving as a member of Oyo State Government Advisory Council.
