It is no news that in no distant time, the University of Ibadan will again ride in the wheels of change as the one- time 5 year tenure of the University’s Vice- Chancellor gradually nears it’s end. The authorities of the Nigeria’s premier university are searching for a new Vice-Chancellor that will succeed Prof. Idowu Abel Olayinka, whose tenure expires on December 1, this year, as the 12th substantive Vice-Chancellor of the institution. In this spirit and in line with the University of Ibadan Act, the school management has declared the nomination process for the appointment of the next Vice- Chancellor open. In a special release signed by the school’s registrar, Prof. Olubunmi O. Faluyi, nomination window opened on Friday 17th July, 2020 and will close at 12 noon, Friday 24th July, 2020. The communique further revealed that the election will hold on Wednesday, 28 July 2020, between the hours of 8:00am and 1:00pm via an e-voting process.
Since the announcement, no fewer than seven renowned scholars from the university had already indicated interest to battle for the top job in the 72-year-old ivory tower. Popular opinions have it that this could be the fiercest VC appointment process ever. The seven people who have already indicated interested in the much coveted job are: The Deputy ViceChancellor (Admin), Prof. Kayode Oyebode Adebowale of the Department of Chemistry, Faculty of Science; former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Adeyinka Abideen Aderinto; Provost of College of Medicine, Prof. Emiola Oluwabunmi Olapade-Olaopa; the immediate past Chief Medical Director (CMD), University College Hospital (UCH), Prof. Temitope Alonge; Prof. Remi Raji-Oyelade of the Department of English; former Dean, Faculty of Law, Prof. Oluyemisi Adefunke Bamgbose, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN); Prof. George Olusegun Ademowo of the Department of Pharmacology and Therapeutic, Faculty of Basic Medical Science and former Dean, Faculty of Arts, Prof. Remi Raji-Oyelade of the Department of English.
In line with the University of Ibadan Act the candidate are expected to: be a highly distinguished scholar of the rank of Professor, with a minimum of 10-year experience on that level and demonstrate ability to provide academic and administrative leadership; be a person of proven integrity; be not more than 65 years old as at the date of possible assumption of duty on December 1, 2020; command the respect of the national and international academic communities through his or her track record; strengthen the bridges between staff, students and other members of the university community; be a person with a clear vision for the development of the university enjoy excellent physical and mental health; and attract the much-needed funds into the university.” Fortunately so, the candidates so far jostling for the job are far beyond the minimum standards prescribed by the act. These candidates have excelled in every way and have represented the institution time and again in various parts of the world. Had wishes been horses, we would have had a taste of every one of their soup as VCs. Unfortunately, the reality is that these brilliant minds will have to jostle their way to the chair which can only take one person in every five years. Who will make it to the ivory tower? ONLY FATE CAN TELL.
