Some University Updates on Covid 19

The current epidemic has affected everything activity-wise, except the market places largely. It has affected our schooling systems and our banking systems, two things that every student cannot do without, money and lectures as it were.
But with the easing lockdown and banks opening up (like the First Bank notably that did shot down almost all her on-sight activities), should we be expecting our schools to open up any time soon? The higher powers know that, we really do not know, but we have updates for you.

  • On the 4th of May 2020, the Federal Government announced her intentions to disinfect schools across the federation. The efforts as reported, are targeted towards offering further safety for students upon resumption. This was disclosed by the Minister of Environment, Muhammad Mamood, during the Presidential Task Force briefing on COVID-19 on Monday, 4th May, 2020 in the FCT. He said that in the phases of an easing lockdown, he believes we would get to a point when we could start opening our schools. The minister also noted that efforts are in place to ensure the commencement of the exercise across the federation as soon as possible.
With the Academic Staff Union of Universities ongoing strike action though, we could expect less of going back to school soon. This could be deemed as good for the students health-wise though, considering a still increasing number of total cases of COVID-19 nationwide.
  • Also, UNIOSUN is set to conduct an online matriculation ceremony on the 13th of May, 2020. This decision was reached by the Principal Officers of the Osun State University (UNIOSUN) on Wednesday 29th April, 2020 for the need to officially admit fresh students into the university. Fresh students of the University were advised to fill their matriculation oath forms online and submit. A hard copy of such oath would be submitted at their respective departments when our world walks upright again on both legs and not on all fours.
  • It should also be noted that the University of Ibadan recently opened her portal for Distance Learning students to pay their school fees. A few cried insensitivity on the school’s part as there is purportedly no money no where as nobody worked in the past month due to the lockdown.
  • LAUTECH also commenced admissions into Open and Distance Learning Degree Programmes For 2020/2021. Qualified candidates were urged to apply for their distance learning programmes.
  • Other tertiary institutions, notably polytechnics are set to commence online academic activities, with Kaduna poly to start her online lectures today, 7th May, 2020. The ICT department of the polytechnic circulated a link to get lecturers registered on the platform, and is set to send another link for students to register, which should kick start today. Rivers State University also announced that academic activities would be commenced on Monday 4th May, 2020. Details of if they have commenced yet is currently unknown.
  • Also, despite the easing of lockdown which commenced on Monday May 4, 2020, the management of the University of Lagos told her members of staff not to resume work. The reason was so as to allow adequate measures to be put in place for a proper resumption because of the COVID-19. Members of Staff were advised to await the schedule of resumption of duty which should be released soon. Staff on vital duties like Works and Physical Planning Unit (Power), Security, and Faculty & Hall Porters were told to be at their duty posts.
  • Meanwhile, the university of Ibadan has also made a provision with some e-learning resources to keep the recently admitted (fresh) students busy in the period of the COVID-19 lockdown. It should be noted that the current resource platform is only for the Newly Admitted Students and not old student. As of now, the university has not come up with a strategy for e-learning for old students. http://lms.ui.edu.ng/course/index.php?categoryid=36
  • It should also be noted lastly that you would need a nose mask at the very least to gain access into the University of Ibadan main gate as of now.
